How to Connect Polar to ChatGPT for AI Running Coaching

Your Polar watch captures precision heart rate, running power, and Training Load Pro data. But ChatGPT can't access any of it. Here's how to bridge the gap through Strava and get a real AI coach that uses your actual Polar data.

Why connect your Polar to ChatGPT?

Polar watches are known for their precision optical heart rate sensor and science-backed training metrics. But all that data stays locked in Polar Flow — invisible to ChatGPT. When you connect through STAS, your AI coach sees everything your watch recorded.

  • Precision heart rate from Polar's optical sensor — one of the most accurate wrist-based HR monitors on the market
  • Running power without a footpod — Polar calculates power from wrist, giving you effort data beyond pace and heart rate
  • Training Load Pro with cardio, muscular, and perceived load — a complete picture of how training stress accumulates
  • Recovery insights like Nightly Recharge and sleep tracking — context that determines what tomorrow's workout should be

How to set it up (5 minutes)

Polar Flow syncs to Strava, and Strava syncs to Intervals.icu. The data chain is automatic: every workout flows from your Polar watch to ChatGPT without manual input.

1

Sync Polar Flow via Strava to Intervals.icu

In Polar Flow, go to Settings and connect your Strava account. Then sign up at intervals.icu (free) and connect Strava in Settings → Connections. Your existing workouts will import automatically. Every future workout syncs within minutes.

2

Connect Intervals.icu to STAS

Log in at stas.run with Telegram (10 seconds). Go to Settings → Connections and click "Connect Intervals.icu". STAS requests read-only access via OAuth — your API key stays encrypted. All workouts, metrics, and fitness history sync automatically.

3

Open STAS GPT in ChatGPT

Click the STAS GPT link in your profile. Authorize on first visit. In every new chat, click the button to load your data — and your AI coach is ready. It sees your full Polar history: every run, every interval, every heart rate reading.

What Polar data does ChatGPT get?

Through the Polar → Strava → Intervals.icu → STAS chain, ChatGPT receives structured, queryable training data — not screenshots or manual summaries.

Heart rate

Average HR, max HR, time in each heart rate zone, HR drift during the session. Polar's precision optical sensor delivers highly accurate data.

Running index

Polar's proprietary metric that tracks your running economy and VO2max estimate over time, alongside VDOT from race results.

Training Load Pro

Cardio load, muscular load, and perceived load — three dimensions of training stress that together paint a complete picture of your fitness.

Running power

Wrist-based running power in watts, calculated without a footpod. Measures actual effort independent of terrain and conditions.

Cadence & altitude

Steps per minute, barometric altitude, elevation gain. Useful for trail and hilly course analysis.

Training load & fitness

CTL (fitness), ATL (fatigue), TSB (form) — computed from every session for precise periodization and readiness tracking.

Polar models that work

All Polar watches that sync with Polar Flow and Strava work with this setup. Here are the most popular models among runners:

Vantage V3Polar

Polar's flagship. Precision HR, running power, Training Load Pro, GNSS, maps, and offline music. Full training ecosystem.

Grit X2 ProPolar

Premium outdoor multisport. Barometric altitude, navigation, and all running metrics. Built for trail and ultra runners.

Pacer ProPolar

Lightweight GPS running watch with barometer. Running power, Training Load Pro, and route navigation at a great value.

Vantage M3Polar

Versatile multisport watch. Precision HR, running power, sleep tracking. Excellent mid-range option for serious runners.

Ignite 3Polar

Fitness-focused with health tracking. Sleep analysis, Nightly Recharge, and all essential running metrics synced to Strava.

Any Polar with Strava sync works. If your Polar watch uploads to Polar Flow and syncs with Strava, it will work through this chain. Older models like Vantage V2, Grit X, Pacer, or Ignite 2 are fully supported too.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect Polar to ChatGPT directly?

No. Polar Flow doesn't connect directly to Intervals.icu. You need Strava as a bridge: Polar Flow → Strava → Intervals.icu → STAS → ChatGPT. The sync is fully automatic once set up.

What Polar data does ChatGPT actually see?

Heart rate, running index, Training Load Pro metrics, running power, cadence, altitude, HR zones, training load, and your full workout history. Everything is structured and queryable — not screenshots.

Does this work with my Vantage V3 / Grit X2 / Pacer Pro?

Yes. All Polar models that sync with Strava are supported — Vantage V3/M3, Grit X2 Pro, Pacer Pro, Ignite 3, and older models like Vantage V2, Grit X, and Ignite 2.

Is the sync automatic after setup?

Completely automatic. Every new workout syncs from Polar Flow to Strava within minutes, then to Intervals.icu, then to STAS instantly via webhook. When you open ChatGPT, your latest data is already there.
