How to Connect Garmin to ChatGPT and Claude.ai

A practical Garmin setup manual: send workouts from Garmin Connect to Intervals.icu, verify the workout detail, then use the same STAS context in ChatGPT or Claude.ai.

First useful action

Your watch data becomes useful only after it reaches the coaching conversation

Garmin, Apple Watch, and other devices send the training record to Intervals.icu. STAS turns it into context for ChatGPT or Claude.

1

Connect the source of truth

Intervals.icu keeps workouts, calendar, load, zones, and recent history in one place.

2

Let AI see real context

STAS prepares that data so ChatGPT or Claude can answer from your actual training, not a pasted summary.

3

Ask for the next decision

Start with a clear analysis or action: recovery check, missed workout, next week, or one session to adjust.

STAS reads only the training data you approve through Intervals.icu. Start with one practical question: current condition, a workout review, or what to change next.

Connect Intervals.icu data

Short answer

Use the direct Garmin Connect → Intervals.icu connection, not Strava as the main bridge. When one recent Garmin workout is visible in Intervals.icu with GPS, pace, heart rate, laps or intervals, sign in to STAS and ask ChatGPT or Claude.ai to update your data.

Before you start

  • Your watch must already sync correctly to Garmin Connect.
  • You need an Intervals.icu account and access to Settings → Connections.
  • Use the same Intervals.icu account when signing in to STAS, ChatGPT, and Claude.ai.
  • If you also use Strava, keep it for social sharing or extra analysis, not as the preferred STAS data path.

Step-by-step setup

  1. 1Open Garmin Connect and sync the watch first. If the workout is missing there, Intervals.icu and STAS cannot see it.
  2. 2Open Intervals.icu → Settings → Connections and connect Garmin. Enable completed activity download and the health or wellness fields you want STAS to use.
  3. 3If you plan workouts in Intervals.icu, enable Garmin planned workout upload and test one easy workout before relying on a key session.
  4. 4Open Intervals.icu → Activities and check one recent Garmin workout.
  5. 5Only after the workout looks useful in Intervals.icu, sign in to STAS with that Intervals.icu account.
  6. 6In ChatGPT, open STAS GPT. In Claude.ai, add STAS as a custom connector.

What to verify before using AI

Check a real workout, not only the connection screen. STAS can only coach from fields that reached Intervals.icu.

  • Sport type, date, duration, distance, GPS track, pace, and elevation.
  • Heart rate, cadence, power, Training Effect, VO2max, recovery, and other Garmin-specific fields you care about.
  • Lap, split, or interval structure for workout analysis.
  • Notes or post-workout report if you want STAS to understand how the session felt.
  • A second new workout syncing automatically after the first setup.

What STAS can use from Garmin

  • Completed workouts with distance, duration, pace, GPS, elevation, laps, splits, intervals, and sport type.
  • Physiology fields such as heart rate, cadence, power, Training Effect, VO2max estimate, recovery, and zones when they reach Intervals.icu.
  • Planning context from Intervals.icu: calendar, upcoming workouts, completed sessions, reports, goals, and your saved STAS rules.
  • Only the data available to STAS at the time you ask ChatGPT or Claude.ai to update your data.

Use Garmin data with ChatGPT or Claude.ai

ChatGPT and Claude.ai use the same STAS data layer. The authorization path is different in each AI app.

ChatGPT

  1. 1Open STAS GPT in ChatGPT.
  2. 2Authorize with the same Intervals.icu account connected to Garmin.
  3. 3Ask “Update my data” first, then ask for workout analysis, weekly comparison, or plan changes.

Claude.ai

  1. 1Open Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector in Claude.
  2. 2Paste the STAS connector URL: https://stas.run/api/mcp.
  3. 3Finish Intervals.icu sign-in with the same account connected to Garmin.
  4. 4Enable STAS in the Claude chat and ask Claude to update your data before analysis or planning.

Planned workout push

Garmin is the strongest path for sending planned workouts from Intervals.icu back to the watch. Still, test the exact workout type, targets, and sport profile on one easy day before trusting a race-specific session.

Important limits

  • STAS does not invent missing Garmin fields. If Intervals.icu does not show laps, HR, power, or wellness data, ChatGPT and Claude.ai should not make strong conclusions from it.
  • Structured workout behavior can vary by watch model, sport profile, firmware, and how the workout is written in Intervals.icu.
  • For coaching quality, direct Garmin → Intervals.icu is preferred over Strava-routed activities.

What about Strava’s official connector?

Strava’s official MCP connector is useful if you want Claude to answer questions from live Strava data. It is read-only and focused on Strava history, trends, and training load. STAS is different: it is a training workflow around Intervals.icu, your saved profile, goals, rules, workout details, calendar planning, and approved plan write-back.

  • Use the Strava connector when the question is mainly about Strava history inside Claude.
  • Use STAS when you want ChatGPT or Claude.ai to coach from Intervals.icu data, saved context, and your plan.
  • For STAS quality, connect Garmin directly to Intervals.icu. Strava-routed activities can be visible but may hide details STAS needs: pace, HR, power, laps, and intervals.

Troubleshooting

  • If ChatGPT or Claude.ai says the Garmin workout is missing, first check whether it is visible in Intervals.icu.
  • If Intervals.icu shows the workout without laps, HR, power, or GPS, fix the Garmin → Intervals.icu connection before asking STAS to analyze it.
  • If a planned workout does not appear on the watch, check the Intervals.icu Garmin upload setting, sync Garmin Connect, and test a simple workout.
  • If Claude does not see STAS tools, reopen the chat and make sure the STAS connector is enabled for that chat.
